The 1st Winter Children of Asia International Sports Games begin their way from three islands in the South Kuriles. Today the Flame arrived in Yuzhno-Kurilsk. On January 7, at Kunashir a relay race will be held. 12 torchbearers will take part in it. These are people who have achieved high results in sports, veterans, public figures, volunteers.

On January 8, the Flame will leave for Shikotan, on January 9, for Iturup, on January 12, the torch keepers will reach Paramushir in the Northern Kuriles. Thus, the Flame will visit all islands of the Kuril Ridge.

— The Torch Relay of the 1st Winter Children of Asia International Sports Games will visit all municipalities of Sakhalin Region and the Kuril Islands. This is a significant event both for the island region and for the Russian and international sports community. It is important for us that the fire becomes a unifying force for the inhabitants. We understand that weather conditions can make adjustments, but the torch keepers — Roman Trubetskoy, Karina Glebova and Ilyas Nurgaliyev are not used to retreat. Therefore, they are ready for difficulties, — said Mr. Vladimir MAKSIMOV, Director General of the 1st Winter Children of Asia International Sports Games Administration.

On January 18, the Torch Relay of the Games will go to Okhinsky urban district, from which it will begin its movement in 18 municipalities. In total, more than 370 torchbearers will take part in the relay. They have to overcome 4112 km.

Recall that the Flame of the Games was lit in the homeland of the competitions — in Yakutia, on the territory of the Lena Pillars National Park. After that the torch keepers carried the fire through the main streets of Yakutsk. On the New Year’s Eve, a lamp with a burning flame was delivered to Sakhalin and transferred to the Head of the island region Mr. Valery LIMARENKO.

1st Winter Children of Asia International Sports Games is the only sports project in Russia, which is held under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The Games in our city are positioned as a preparatory stage for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Lausanne.
