1ST WINTER CHILDREN OF ASIA INTERNATIONAL SPORTS GAMES START IN SAKHALIN
A solemn Opening Ceremony of the large-scale event, that is held under the aegis of UNESCO and the patronage of the International Olympic Committee, took place in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. 28 teams from 20 countries marched at the Spartak stadium.
Ms. Olga GOLODETS, Vice-Premier of the Russian Government, welcomed the participants of the Games and the residents on behalf of Vladimir Putin. The President noted that the 1st Winter Children of Asia International Sports Games fulfil an important mission to develop children and youth sport and to enhance mutial understanding between people.
-I’m sure that the Children of Asia will become a real holiday, they will allow you to demonstrate your abilities, strong-willed character and winner’s attitude, will make unforgettable impression on everyone,- said Ms. Olga GOLODETS on behalf of Vladimir Putin.
The acting Governor of the Sakhalin region Mr. Valery LIMARENKO congratulated athletes and fans with the opening of the large-scale competitions.
— And this year the Games are special. The first winter! The first — on Sakhalin! We do our best to hold the Games at the highest level so that you want to come back to us again, – said the acting governor.
The Acting Governor of the region noted that the Sakhalin region is expanding economic cooperation and strengthening friendly relations with Asian countries. And these days, the entire Asia-Pacific region is united by the love of sport
Solemn speeches were made by the Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation Mr. Pavel KOLOBKOV, representative of the International Olympic Committee Ms. Samira ASGARI and other officials.
A grand and unforgettable show continued the acting. Local teams and Russian pop stars from Moscow and St. Petersburg performed at the Spartak stadium. At the end of the event, the torch keepers of the games lit a stylized lighthouse, and the sky above the city was lit up with solemn fireworks.
Recall, sports competitions will be held on Sakhalin for 10 days. More than a thousand athletes from 20 countries take part in them. These include Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Nepal, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Jordan, Tajikistan, Philippines, Japan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, UAE, India, Kuwait, Syria, Armenia. Russia will be represented by teams from Moscow, the Republics of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Sakha (Yakutia), the Sakhalin region, the Siberian, Ural and Far Eastern Federal districts. The medals will be played off in eight sports: Alpine skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, figure skating, short track and hockey.
Visitors and athletes will enjoy a variety of entertainment during the Games. A cultural park began to work near the Government House. It will be open every day from 14:00 p.m. Singers, dancers, island athletes will perform on the stage. In addition, the cultural park will have interactive platforms, where various workshops and sports activities will be organized for children and their parents . There will be a recreation areaIn a special tent, where there will be entertaining board games and game consoles. Also in the warming centre you can watch the live broadcast of the Games.
The closing ceremony of the Games will be held on February 16 at 19:00 at the Spartak stadium.
